What should you understand before you start beginning piano lessons?

  • At first, learning the piano will not be easy. You might learn some simple songs right away, but soon or later you’ll come up against a challenge that is more difficult for you, even if you already know how to play another musical instrument. You will need to be mentally prepared to stay the course. Just know that as long as you keep practicing every day, even when you “don’t feel like it”, you will make progress. You can overcome all of the hard challenges that learning the piano throws at you. Some will take longer to overcome for you than others will, and sometimes you will have to play a small section of a song, piece, or exercise over and over again before you get it right.
  • Never fail to do proper warm up exercises, especially in the Winter months. An all too common affliction of those who are just beginning piano lessons is carpal tunnel syndrome. This will be very painful, interfere with many activities in your life, and definitely interfere with your piano practice both technically and in the sense of enjoyment (translation: you won’t enjoy it at all, if you can even get through it).
  • Learn the musical ideas and concepts behind a song or piece. Don’t just learn to play something by rote. “Learning” that way is just shallow. Don’t be put off by studies in theory, chords, scales, and so on and so forth. Learn to be fascinated by these things.
  • Never stop being patient, persistent, and disciplined. These are the three keys to success in anything, really, and definitely in learning the piano. It’s not easy at first to learn any musical instrument at all. The piano will engage your whole being: both hands, your feet, your brain, your emotions, your spirit. You have to practice for at least one hour every day (although this practice time can be broken up into three 20-minute sessions if that suits you better). Once your muscles are in tune with piano playing you should try to increase your practice time to 14 hours per week.

There are a couple of online products that I highly recommend which will totally enable you to learn piano fast. My personal favorite is Rocket Piano.
